LG-SH240 HSDPA Phone Feels Like Skin

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

The new LG-SH240 3G HSDPA slider cell phone’s selling point is not its 3G or its HSDPA capabilities, but it’s unusual texture. The LG-SH240 cell phone actually feels like skin. I don’t know why anyone would want their cell phones to feel like human skin, but LG seems to think it’s a good idea. The texture came from a design using silicon which is used on the front panel including the directional buttons, keypad, and menu.

The LG-SH240 comes with SK Telecom Korea’s MONETA service, 2 megapixel camera, MP3 player, video telephony, and Bluetooth connectivity. The cell phone will sell for approximately US$400 in the Korea market.

Top 10 Facebook Phone Applications

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

There are two things that are increasingly on the rise in today’s society in terms of how we network and communicate with one another. The first is the widespread use of the mobile phone which has become an almost-necessary item in our daily lives. Without a cell phone, most of us couldn’t easily conduct the business that we do on a daily basis, let alone keep our social lives active! The other important communication tool that we’re using today is online social networking through sites such as Facebook. These sites let us stay in touch with people all around the world through a combination of text, photo and data messages.

Because both of these things are on the rise and both of them are directly connected to the way that we keep in touch with others, it’s no surprise that there are developments being made which link these two worlds together. Although there are many different social networking sites, the biggest leaps in applications for those sites are being made on Facebook. If you’re a Facebook user who knows about the many applications offered there, then you know that there are numerous fun things that you can add to your Facebook to personalize it and cater it to your unique needs and interests. There are also many applications that help to make Facebook more efficient and functional both for social use and for business purposes.

Following you’ll find the top ten Facebook applications that relate to mobile phones. Some of these are fun little widgets that let you show the world what cell phone you have. Others are functional tools that help you to find a better phone. And many are communication tools that enhance the way that you text message and place inexpensive VoIP calls through Facebook. Together, these tools help to make your online social networking and mobile phone experiences a whole lot better.

1. Facebook Mobile. People who use Facebook regularly might want to be able to make use of it from their mobile phones. That’s possible with this application which lets you do basic Facebook activities like reply to messages and post (via text) on the “walls” of your friends. Additionally, you can take photos with your camera phone and upload those to Facebook.

2. Phone Fun. People who are interested in making prank calls through the Internet will like this application. It allows you to type in a message and then uses text-to-speech technology to relay that message in voice to the person that you’re calling through Facebook.

3. Free Conference Calls. This Facebook applications does exactly what it’s name says it does; it allows users to make free conference calls through the Facebook site. These calls can be made from any form of Internet including the Internet as accessed on your mobile phone. This greatly facilitates inexpensive business communication between remote and on-the-go employees.

4. I Love My Phone. Want to tell the world that you’re infatuated with the mobile phone you spend so much money and time on? You can do so through Facebook with this application. It automatically adds a picture and description of your phone to the site so that the world can see what phone you’re using. If you want to share the information of what network you use, you can do that as well.

5. Mobile Phone Wars. Perhaps you don’t just want people to know about the phone that you have and love but you also want them to know which hot mobile you’re planning to get next. This Facebook application will let you do it. It’s a great way to not-so-subtly let others know what you’d like to be gifted with but it’s also a way to show off what cell phone technology you’re currently most interested in.

6. Fund My Phone. If you’re the kind of person that wants to be a lot less subtle about begging others to fund your phone, this application is the one for you. You have to have a Virgin Mobile phone but basically you put an ad on your site and earn airtime for every time that someone watches the ad through your Facebook. It’s only for Virgin Mobile phones right now but if the application does well we could see similar ones hit the market for other phones in the future.

7. UK Mobile Phone Checker. If you aren’t sure which mobile phone you want (and you live in the UK) you can narrow down your options through this application. You install it and then it will aggregate all of the phone contracts currently available in the UK and let you compare them side-by-side in order to assist you in making your decision.

8. Send SMS-Text Messaging. You’ve used up all of your SMS messages for the month and don’t want to have to pay to text your friends. What should you do? The answer is that you can go to Facebook where you’ve installed this application and you can send those SMS messages to their phones at no charge. There’s also an application called SchickClick which works as the opposite of this one. It allows people to contact you through your Facebook application with a text message sent to your phone.

9. Friends GPS. Do you want your Facebook friends to know where you are at all times? If so, you can upload that information into Facebook using this GPS system. On the other hand, as is pointed out by the company that made the application, you can also fake your location so everyone on your Facebook thinks that you’re somewhere that you’re not. You can also search for people around you when you’re on the go and send out event invitations to people that are shown as being near you.

10. Click-to-Call Widgets. As we’ve mentioned before on this site, these are great little tools that allow you to connect via phone through your computer. People have started creating Facebook applications that allow you to put these right on your profile. This means that your Facebook contacts can get in touch with you without you having to reveal your personal contact information. There are multiple widgets out there for Facebook but a few of them are Connectapus, Call Me on Skype and Flirtable.

You won’t want to use all of the mobile phone applications that are available for Facebook. They vary in quality and your interest level will vary depending on your use of the site. But for people who are starting to have a strong interest in merging their phone communication and online networking worlds, these applications can be a terrific way to get started.
